Mykolaiv, a peninsula surrounded by the Bug River, is one of the most commercially and strategically important cities of Ukraine. The population of Mykolaiv consists of 72 percent Ukrainians, 22 percent Russians, and a small group of Jews and 500 thousand people from Belarus. Mykolaiv, where the companies succeeded in winning a name for themselves in the world in terms of shipbuilding thanks to the geography of the peninsula, is the most important shipbuilding center of the Black Sea. There are also three major shipyards producing ships for the Ukrainian navy, located on the bank of the Bug River.

The sea and trade port in Mykolaiv, which is regarded as the transportation center of Ukraine, railway junction and airport offer easy transportation opportunity to commercial firms and passengers. Mykolaiv International Airport, the largest airport in the country, is equipped with the latest technology. Visitors can travel to all cities of Ukraine from the intercity bus terminal. Every day from the train station there are regular services to Kiev, Odessa and Kherson. Urban transportation is provided by trolleybus, buses and tramways.
