About Umea

Umea is a city built on a forested site in the north-east of Sweden. Known for its educational success, it is also known as Sweden's most important medical and industrial city. The fire that broke out in 1888 in the city left 2300 people homeless. Birch trees are then being planted to prevent the spread of fires on the boulevards of the rebuilt city. For this reason, the city is called "the city of birch trees". Nowadays, population is increasing every year in the city, which is a fast growing one. From the port of Holmsund, the only port in the city, it is possible to go to the city of Vaasa in Finland.

The Umea Airport is 4 kilometers from the city center and the highways are highly developed. In the city where railroads are not very developed, fast trains make it possible to go to Sweden’s capital Stockholm in 10 hours. The Umea Jazz Festival is held every year in the city, which hosts a lot of cultural activities. Besides this, the Norrland Opera is located in this city. In the city's Vasterbotten area there are museums about history, art and skiing. The only mosque in the city is the northern most of the world.
