About Aberdeen

Aberdeen is the third most populated city in Scotland and is referred to as the “Granite City”, “the Grey City” and “the Silver City with Golden Sands” due to the gray hues that dominate the structures in the city. Aberdeen also had the nicknames of the “Oil Capital of Europe” or “the Energy Capital of Europe” after the discovery of North Sea oil in the 1970s. The city is home to the busiest harbor in the north of the United Kingdom and one of the busiest heliports in the world.

Electronic design and development industry, research in agriculture, fishing, and the oil industry drive the city’s economy. Aberdeen is an important production site for oil as well as forest products, paper, and deep-sea fisheries. Aberdeen’s beautiful beaches have donned it the nickname of “Golden Sands”. The city also attracts tourists because of it historic structures and museums. The Aberdeen Maritime Museum is particularly interesting since the city is historically a fisherman’s town. Other major attractions in the city include the Tolbooth Museum, which is a 17th Century Jail, the Provost Skene’s House Museum, which dates back to the 16th century, the Aberdeen Arts Centre, and the Wellington Suspension Bridge.

Aberdeen is accessible by water via the port, train via the railway station and by air via Aberdeen Airport. Aberdeen Airport is located 10 km northwest of the city center. There are bus lines that provide transportation between Aberdeen Airport and the city center.
