Transportation to Manila Airport from the City Center

Situated in the Metro Marina District, composed of many cities, Manila, the capital of the Philippines, is the city with the largest population in the country. The city of Manila is divided into sixteen towns. These include Malate, the hotel district, the tourist-driven entertainment district Ermita, Intramuros reflecting the city's historic charm, San Miguel and Sampaloc with their universities, and Paco, which is predominantly the center of business. Manila is the most developed city in the Philippines, with regards to transportation, business and education. At the same time, Manila is a very pleasant choice for tourists with its green nature and unique islands.

This city is home to Ninoy Aquino International Airport. In Manila, the most commonly used means of public transportation within the city are rail system and buses. In addition to traditional means of urban transport, there are also public transportation systems peculiar to the Philippines, such as phaetons, three-wheel vehicles and minibuses. When you use public transport in the city, you can take advantage of single use tickets, or the special tickets that you can load money on.

We advise you to buy these special tickets, especially if you travel frequently, so that you can avoid the long ques to buy ticket every time. You can check the departure times of the vehicles from the internet, but we recommend that you do not depend on these hours too much. Buses usually do not stick to these schedules. At the same time, as public transportation vehicles are often crowded, it is useful to pay attention to your valuable goods during your trip. If you want to travel faster and more practically, you can also use taxis, and bicycles and phaetons that work like taxis. Since the tourist areas and entertainment venues in the city are close to each other, it is possible to reach some places by foot. In addition, you can travel to many different coastal cities in Metro Manila by the ferries that you can take from the port area near the Pasig River, located in the Manila Bay.

As an alternative to traveling to neighboring cities, you can also use intercity buses and train lines. More options are available in the city center to provide transportation to Ninoy Aquino International Airport. It is possible to reach the airport from various parts of the city by buses or Jeepneys, which are used as minibuses. There are also taxi or car rental options to access the airport. One of the most serious problems at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport is that there is no regular connection between the terminals. There are four terminals in the airport, but the connection between them is provided by vehicles; a way that is not common in many other airports. For this reason, it is necessary to pay attention to which terminal you should get off when you travel to the airport. If you get off at the wrong terminal you may need to take a bus or Jeepney again. While Terminal 1 is used for international flights, Terminal 2 is reserved for the flights of Philippine Airlines. Terminal 3 is used for domestic flights and Terminal 4 is for eligible flights and, in some cases, international flights.

Bus

Buses, passing through many areas of the city, take the passengers to the stations at the exit of the arrival gates of the airport. You may need to transfer to a train, where the airport buses do not pass through. You should keep in mind that airport buses are very crowded during heavy traffic hours. The buses that go to the airport from the area where you are located usually change, and they travel around many parts of the city changing their routes, especially at busy times. Buses are one of the most preferred means of urban transport. Bus lines are an important public transport option throughout the city, especially for travelling to the points that trains cannot reach.

Jeepney

The land vehicles which have large capacities, called as jeepney, are used as a means of public transport. As with many public transports, Jeepneys can be overcrowded. Jeepney, the most popular public transportation system in the country, has also become a traditional symbol of the Philippines with its unique style of decoration. These vehicles provide transportation services to many of the areas you want to go in the city.

Train (Light Rail System)

If you want to use a cheap, fast and practical means of public transport that is not affected by the traffic jam, train is the best option. Nevertheless, trains are as crowded as all other means of public transport. Trains, known as LRT (Light Rail Transit System), travel throughout the entire Metro Manila region, including Manila. Although it uses a light rail system, the LRT lines are similar to the system that the metro uses. Although the train lines do not provide a direct service to the airport, most buses and jeepneys to the airport offer connections from these train lines.

There are two different train lines. The green line, LRT 1, starts at Baclaran Station, in the southernmost part of city, and travels up to the Roosevelt Station, in the north of the city, following the road by the Manila Bay, in the west of the city. The blue line, LRT 2, runs parallel to the Pasig River, traveling to west from the east, linking LRT 1 and MRT (metro) lines.

Metro

Metro does not provide a direct transport service to the airport, as in the case of the trains. It is possible to transfer to the buses to the airport from some metro stations. The Metro is known as the MRT (Metro Rail Transit System) and operates similarly to the light rail system. The MRT line is known as the third (yellow) line, as the continuation of the LRT 1 and LRT 2 lines. With this line, you can transfer to LRT 1 line at Roosevelt Station. From the North Avenue Station, which is the first stop on this line, you can travel to the south of the city in the east direction, and transfer to Taft Avenue Station, the southern tip of the green line, on the southernmost part of the city. So the LRT 1 and MRT lines draw a circle around the city and the LRT 2 line connects these two lines, from the very center of this circle.

Railcar

The heavy rail system operating with a single carriage engine, called railcar, is also known as the orange line, PNR (Philippine National Railways), among the rail systems in the Philippines. These vehicles depart every half an hour and are usually preferred for transportation between neighboring cities in Metro Manila region.

Taxi

In the Philippines, all means of public transportation are crowded; this is why it cannot be said that public transport provides a fast and comfortable transportation service. For this reason, taxis are one of the most comfortable options for airport transportation from the city. However, taxi fares are very high compared to public transportation. Taxis that are especially serving to the hotels can charge higher fares compared to ordinary taxis, so we advise you not to trust the taxis in general. Especially drivers who do not open the taximeter can charge much more than normal fare.

In addition to the standard taxis, there also taxis known as Pedicabs; these are bikes mounted in cabins for two. These are much more affordable than standard taxis, but they usually work at short distances and their safety can be questioned. So these do not offer a convenient option to go to the airport.

If you are in a region where you are having difficulty reaching public transport, you can also use three-wheeled taxis, called Tricycle. Tricycle and Pedicab vehicles have stations in the city center. If you wish, you can use these to get to the city center, and continue your trip from here by transferring to other vehicles.

Car Rental

Another option for quick and practical transportation to the airport is renting a car. Especially if you are going to spend time in the city before going to the airport, we recommend you to rent a car. It is possible to find a car from the Rent a Car offices located in the city center. You can also reserve your car online in advance. However, we remind you that the traffic inside the city can sometimes be very cramped.

Airport Information

Ninoy Aquino International Airport is an airport serving not only to Manila, but to all cities in Metro Manila region. Known as the largest airport in the Philippines, Ninoy Aquino cannot please its passengers in terms of service provided.

The fact that it is not possible to travel between the terminals on foot can lead to serious troubles in transportation. In addition, due to organizational shortcomings, flight annulations and delays are frequent. Within the airport, each terminal has ATMs and machines to exchange money. In Terminal 1, which is also used for international flights, there are two duty-free shops where you can find quality favors, as well as many cafes, restaurants and bars.

Passengers who plan to fly domestically within the Philippines can spend time in a large four-storey shopping mall linked to Terminal 3 while they are waiting for their flight.

Transportation to New York City Center from Airport

John F. Kennedy Intl. Airport

JFK Airport is located in Queens, about 20 km from Manhattan. There are many transportation methods to get from the airport to various parts of the city. You can take the metro, train, bus, taxi, rental car, or use an airport shuttle service. You can easily get to public transportation hubs by taking the AirTrain trains that depart from the airport. These trains also provide transportation between the terminals, rental car services, parking lot, and the hotel shuttle services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

AirTrain trains provide transportation within the airport for free. However, if you want to go to the main stations that allow access to the city’s metro, bus, and train lines, then you have to pay a fee. You can pay this fee using the MetroCard payment system, which is valid for all public transportation networks in the city. You can get a MetroCard from the automated ticket machines at the airport.

Metro

To get to the New York City Subway from the airport you have to first get on the AirTrain. There is an AirTrain station located in each passenger terminal, making the train easy to access. If you want to transfer to metro line E, J, or Z then take the AirTrain to Jamaica Station. If you want to transfer to metro line A then take the AirTrain to Howard Beach Station.

If you’re planning on transferring to one of the city’s other metro lines from lines A, E, J, or Z you can plan your route by taking a look at a map of the New York City Subway online. If you get on metro line E from Jamaica Station you can get to the western section of Queens, central Manhattan, and some transfer points in the Bronx.

Getting from the airport to Manhattan takes about 50 to 75 minutes, including the AirTrain ride from the airport to the station. By taking the AirTrain train to Jamaica Station you will have access to metro lines J and Z which provide transportation to the north of Queens, stations in the south of Brooklyn, and Manhattan. Metro line A, which runs through Howard Beach Station, provides transportation to lower Manhattan. To get on the metro you have to use a MetroCard, which you can purchase at the airport or at the metro stations. There are many card types you can purchase that depend on a variety of factors. Some of these card types include the SingleRide ticket, Pay-Per-Ride MetroCard, EasyPayXPress MetroCard, or Unlimited MetroCard. You can evaluate the most appropriate MetroCard option according to your needs during your stay in the city.

Train

After taking the AirTrain to Jamaica Station you can get on the LIRR (Long Island Rail Road) trains to get to Penn Station, located in central Manhattan. Penn Station is one of the main stations in Manhattan. It is very centrally located, in close proximity to the Empire State Building and Herald Square. These trains are the fastest way to get from JFK Airport to the city center. The AirTrain trains from JFK to Jamaica Station take about 10 minutes. From Jamaica Station you can get to Manhattan in about 35 minutes. From Jamaica Station you can also use the LIRR train lines to get to different areas in Brooklyn, Long Island, and Queens. If you buy your train ticket before boarding you will save money on your ticket. Getting a MetroCard beforehand is more advantageous. We recommend that you purchase the prepaid card, which offers a variety of different fare options including a weekly, monthly, or a 10-ride card, at the airport or at the station.

Bus

You can also take a bus to get from JFK to the city, although this tends to be the least preferred transportation method. To get to Jamaica Station take the AirTrain train from the airport terminal. At Jamaica Station you can get on one of the New York City buses. Many bus lines pass through this station and provide transportation to various parts of the city. Buses that operate from Jamaica Station are Q6, Q8, Q9, Q20, Q24, Q25, Q30, Q31, Q34, Q40, Q41, Q43, Q44, Q54, Q56, Q60 and Q65. To get to Howard Beach Station take the AirTrain train from the airport terminal. At Howard Beach Station you can get to central Queens by taking bus line Q11. You can also use bus lines Q10 and Q3, which depart from a stop close to the Terminal 5, to get to Queens. The bus route for line Q10 passes by stops where you can connect to New York Subway lines A, E, and F.

Similarly, bus line Q3 stops at 169th Street and Hillside Ave where you can connect to the F line. You can transfer to the metro from these stops. Bus line B15 also departs from Terminal 5 and travels to the east of New York. Buses, along with the subway, are the cheapest means of transportation to get from the airport to the city center. However, since buses drive through city traffic it can take longer to reach your destination. If you have a lot of luggage getting from the airport to the city by bus can be a hassle.

Airport Shuttle Bus Service

Another way to get from the airport to the city is by NYC Airporter Express shuttle bus services. These bus stops are located at each terminal exit. NYC Airporter Express shuttle buses provide transportation to Penn Station, Grand Central Terminal, and Port Authority Bus Terminal. The ride takes about 90 minutes but can vary depending on traffic. This service also offers hotel shuttles that depart from central Manhattan and take you to your hotel. The large airport shuttle bus drops you off at Bryant Park where smaller hotel shuttle vans await to take you to your hotel. NYC Airporter Express shuttle buses run every 30 minutes from 5 am to 11:30 pm every day of the week.

Taxi

New York City’s yellow cabs are located at the terminal exits. Taxis offer a flat rate from JFK to Manhattan, which does not include bridge tolls. If you are going to more than one destination in the city the flat rate to the first destination will apply and from then on the taximeter will be turned on to calculate the inner-city fare. New York taxis can take a total of 4 people. Normal taxi fares (excluding the flat rate) can vary depending on the operating hours. 4pm to 8 pm are considered peak hours where a surcharge is applied to the fare.

We recommend familiarizing yourself with the city and taxis fares. There is the possibility of your taxi driver going the long route to increase the total fare. It’s important to be aware of it.

Rental Cars

Rental car offices are located in the arrival halls of each terminal. There are 10 rental car companies located at JFK Airport: Advantage, Budget, Hertz, Alamo, Dollar, National, Avis, Enterprise, Payless, and Thrifty. If you’re trip is limited to New York City then it is not really necessary to rent a car. Not only can you walk to many places in the city, New York’s subway system enables you to navigate the city without dealing with traffic. The subway system covers almost every region of New York. There are also many alternatives to get from the airport to the city. However, if you are going to travel to surrounding areas and plan on renting a car you can do so at the airport and in the city. Let us remind you that renting a car isn’t cheap and parking in New York can be expensive.

Newark Liberty Intl. Airport

Newark Liberty Airport is the second largest airport in New York, after JFK International Airport, handling international air traffic to the city. Newark Liberty Airport is located 23 km from Manhattan, situated between Newark and Elizabeth in New Jersey. There are many methods of transportation to get from Newark Liberty Airport to the city center, including the train, airport shuttle, rental car, or taxi. The AirTrain trains depart from the terminals and provide transportation between terminals, to the parking lot, to the hotel shuttle service departure locations, and the train station.

Train

The train is the fastest way to reach central Manhattan. To get to the airport train station you have to take the AirTrain, which is departs from each terminal. AirTrain trains run 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Between 5 am and 12 am trains run every 3 minutes. From 12 am to 5 am trains run every 15 minutes. This train line is free within the airport, i.e. between terminals and the parking lot, but there is a fee to use it to get to the airport train station.

If you’re going to take the train you can buy your ticket at the airport; the AirTrain fee will be included. Keep your ticket with you until your final destination. You have to show your ticket both on the AirTrain and on the train you will be transferring to. The AirTrain trains depart from the front of the airport terminals and go to the Newark Liberty Airport Station. From here you can take the Amtrak or NJ Transit (New Jersey Transit) trains to New York Penn Station.

Penn Station is the first stop for both lines. From here you can also transfer to the PATH rapid transit system and take it to Journal Square or the World Trade center. The AirTrain to Newark Liberty Airport Station from the airport terminals takes about 10 minutes. From this station after you transfer to the NJ Transit or Amtrak train lines you can get to Newark Penn Station in approximately 15 minutes and New York Penn Station in approximately 30 minutes.

By transferring to the PATH line from Newark Penn Station you can get to the World Trade Center in 40 minutes. The NJ Transit train line operates from 6 am to 9 pm with at least 6 trains running per hour. Between 9 pm and 11 pm the frequency of trains goes down to 4 trains per hour. You can also use the NJ Transit line to transfer to other areas outside of New York, like Jersey City and Trenton, located in New Jersey. The Amtrak trains operate less frequently.

Amtrak trains, which operate between the airport, New York, and Philadelphia, run about every hour. You can also take the Amtrak to Boston, which takes 5 hours, or Washington DC, which takes 3 hours. You can also take an Amtrak train to get to various cities in Rhode Island, Richmond, and Connecticut.

The PATH trains are a slightly faster alternative to get to certain stops in New York, like the World Trade Center, Journal Square, or 33rd Street. You can transfer from NJ Transit to the PATH at Newark Penn Station.

Another transportation method to get to the city from Newark Liberty Airport is by taxi. These taxis are New Jersey-based cabs. There is no flat-rate applied since Newark is a bit further away from Manhattan when compared to other airports in the city. The taximeter will be turned on to calculate the fare. The taxi fare will vary depending on your destination. There is an addition fee for luggage that is larger than 24 inches. The metered fare does not include charges such as bridge tolls.

If you are not familiar with the city we recommend doing some research beforehand to avoid the possibility of being taken on the longer route to increase the total fare. During rush hour taking a taxi can take longer than taking the train. Nevertheless, it provides door-to-door transportation so taxis are always a comfortable means of transportation. You can easily find a taxi at the passenger terminal exits.

Rental Car

You can find the offices of rental car companies in the arrival halls of the terminals. There are 10 rental car companies located at Newark Liberty Airport: Advantage, Budget, Hertz, Alamo, Dollar, National, Avis, Enterprise, Payless, and Thrifty.
