There are agricultural areas in the central and southern regions of Porto Santo, a few coastal strips in the south, forests in the west and plains and hills in the north. The nine-kilometer beach in the city is the focus of tourists. In the same city Christopher Colombus's house is displayed as a museum for tourists. The Spanish golf champion Severino Ballesteros set up a golf course and is known for the 2009 Maderia Island Golf Tournament. The numerous hotels and holiday villages on the island make it a preferred place for tourists as well as to enhance the beauty of the beach. Despite being a small island, there are many hotels and restaurants on the island, including schools, health centers, churches, squares, museums and shopping centers.
